Adobe and Microsoft are wasting my time

Without any real appreciation of just how complex it must be to release an operating system (with all the inherent backwards compatibility issues that WILL surface) or to create software that is hard to pirate yet easy for legitimate users to have fair use of - let me simply say that Adobe and Microsoft have wasted a week of my life.

I speak of my recent Vista install (which has gone TERRIBLY) and my subsequent migration (well trial migration at this stage) to CS3.

First of all, if you’re planning on upgrading to Vista - I’d highly recommend upgrading only if you’ve got relatively new hardware to run it on. By this I mean hardware that the manufacturers are still willing to support with driver releases. Turns out my beloved NForce 2 motherboard is no longer supported by Nvidia and so I’ve got a few issues with Vista talking to my hardware. Seems Nvidia are at the core of my issues, with their ForceWare drivers for the graphics card still leaving a lot to be desired. And where the hell has nView gone! I have to rely on third party software just to run different wallpapers on different screens. Come on Nvidia or Mircrosoft, get your sh!t together on the dual screen front already!

Further to this, the graphics architecture changes in the OS itself prevent me from using my laptop as a third screen. Maxivista (the software I use to do this) isn’t compatible with Vista (despite Vista being in the name!)…. yet.

My keybard and mouse are now no longer supported (kiss the extra function keys goodbye), my webcam won’t work and my VoIP software crackles and splutters, probably due to an incorrect audio driver being installed on the system.

So I’ve basically spent the last week turning a perfectly fine (commercialy viable) computer into one that is far from where it needs to be.

And the reason for this pain? Well I want to get CS3 of course! Yep, all this just so I could install CS3 (which doesn’t work on Windows 2000).

But I’m not quite ready to put my money on the line and buy CS3. I was hoping to get my 30 days trial out of it, and get the software towards the end of this period. Looks like all the system restores and bios fiddling I’ve been doing has put an abrubt stop to that. Over the weekend I tried to load up Fireworks, only to see the “Trial Expired” screen…. wtf!? But I’ve still got 25 days of trial left I thought… loaded up Flash… same thing!!! So looks like I’ve now got to load up my old Adobe/Macromedia software so I can actually do some work today!

I feel like knocking up an invoice and sending it to Bill and Bruce for the last week of farnakling I’ve had to endure.

Fingers crossed things will get better… if not I’m pulling the pin and getting a Mac. And I think that’s a serious thing for the powers that be at Microsoft. When long time PC supporters and once staunch defenders of everything PC are jumping ship, I imagine those users with less “feeling” for their computer will be marching into Apple’s camp in droves.

Does my bum look big in this AS3 component?

Did a little comparison today of the AS2 components versus the AS3 components. Here’s what I found:

Component AS3 AS2
Button 14Kb 26Kb
Checkbox 15Kb 27Kb
ColorPicker 19Kb NA
ComboBox 35Kb 55Kb
DataGrid 41Kb 59Kb
Label 14Kb 22Kb
List 29Kb 47Kb
NumericStepper 18Kb 28Kb
ProgressBar 16Kb 26Kb
RadioButton 16Kb 29Kb
ScrollPane 21Kb 38Kb
Slider 17Kb NA
TextArea 21Kb 39Kb
TextInput 15Kb 25Kb
TileList 33Kb NA
UILoader 15Kb 26Kb (mx.controls.Loader)
UIScrollBar 18Kb 34Kb

I also note that there is no AS3 component equivalents for the AS2 Accordian, Alert, DateChooser, DateField, Menu, MenuBar, Tree and Window components. What is the plan for these rather useful missing components? Or are they seen as being Flex related so are no longer released with the Flash IDE? Can someone shed some light on how we can get access to these missing components?

Flash 98 - Apollo 0

I’m a flash developer.

Though I’ve always taken the claims that 98% of internet enabled desktops have the Flash plug-in. I’ve seen this marketing babble get run a few times now in regards to Apollo vs. Silverlight and in general when talking about the ubiquity of the Flash family of products (Flash, Flash Lite, Flex and now Apollo).

Regarding Apollo, how does “98%” of the internet having Flash installed make any difference to the (at this point in time) 0% of the general public that have the Apollo runtime installed… I just don’t see the connection.

What is interesting me about Apollo is not so much the ability to create something for the web (ie. Flex) and be able to deploy it to the desktop (at least on Mac and Windows XP and Vista) but how Adobe intend on getting the install base of Apollo up to make it a viable solution to recommend to customers and clients. Time will tell what strategy they have, but considering Vista doesn’t come with Flash (or the Apollo runtime for that matter) coupled with the distinct possibility of Microsoft making Silverlight (et al) some form of necessary Windows update, I think Adobe has it’s work cut out for it.

For the record, I’m rooting for Adobe.

Apollo’s user-agent string

I’ve been quite interested to see how Apollo handles the rendering of HTML, which got me thinking about what user-agent string it would actually present to a site that it is browsing. So, here ’tis:

AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/419.3 Apollo/1.0.Alpha1

I haven’t seen this mentioned much before, but when visiting sites that detect for Flash using the swfobject code, the alternative content ends up being displayed in Apollo. I’m assuming this is because the swfobject can’t detect whether the flash plugin is installed within the Apollo browser. Has anyone else noticed this, or have any pointers as to how to circumvent this?

Flash CS3 Compiler

I’m not sure why this particular feature wasn’t given a bit more airplay, but this little tidbit from the new Introducing Adobe Flash CS3 Professional article got me slightly excited:

Code editor enhancements include Script Assist mode for ActionScript 3.0 and the same compiler as Flex Builder.

The same compiler as Flex Builder…? As in the one that’s about 10 times quicker than the compiler in Flash 8?! I’m hoping that the Flex compiler in Flash CS3 works as quickly on AS3.0 as it does on AS2.0 as I’ll probably be writing that for a while yet. Would love a comment from someone more in the know than me on this.

New Flash CS3 Components

I’ve just been watching the tours for a few of the new CS3 products and am wondering if anyone can shed some light on what components are included in Flash CS3?

The list I have (and this is only taken from the product tour video) is:

Button
CheckBox
ColorPicker*
ComboBox
DataGrid
Label
List
NumericStepper
ProgressBar
RadioButton
ScrollPane
Slider*
TextArea
TextInput
TileList*
UILoader
UIScrollBar

(* new for CS3 as far as I can tell)

Preventing comment spam with math

I came to the realisation yesterday when I posted about Apollo that the spam protection I was using was actually stopping all visitors from leaving comments on my blog. I disabled it for about 12 hours and in that time watched the spam flow in. The solution: Math Comment Spam Protection Plugin

Hopefully everyone’s elementary math is up to scratch. Good thing I didn’t install the “Fourier Transform Comment Spam Protection Plugin” instead ;-)

Houston, we have a problem

Not one to get left out of the blogging frenzy at the moment, I thought I’d better add my $0.02 about the Apollo release… and I would except it doesn’t work on Win2K!!!

So now Adobe want me to upgrade to Vista as well???

Would love to hear something from Adobe re: the final target system requirements for Apollo.

And yes, I realise this is an Alpha release… just a bit bummed I can’t get in on the Apollo action at this stage.

Latest Flash Penetration stats

Seems the latest stats for December 2006 have just been published here

It’s interesting to see what a difference Russia, India and Taiwan have made to the December 2006 Flash 9 stats. In all other Flash versions for December 2006, the emerging markets lag behind the rest of the world for Flash installs. However, Flash 9 seems to be installed more regularly in the emerging markets that it is in the established markets. I’m sure there’s some whiz bang statistical terms I could be using here - but hopefully this conclusion will suffice: Indian’s love Flash 9. It’s great to see the emerging markets really getting on board with the installation of new technology, makes my life as a flash developer just that bit easier. iPhones for Osama

Could the newly announced iPhone be the solution to a world gripped by terror?

John Mayer closed the recent Macworld expo with the following comments:

“Steve Jobs and Apple Inc. just make life more fun - it’s the exact opposite of terrorism.”

(And yes I’m drawing a very long Apple iBow here ;-) Perhaps if the iPhone made its way into the lives of those inflicting the terror, the fun they’re having with their shiny new Apple product may just make them forget their devious schemes…. failing that, there’s only 5 hours of battery life to watch re-runs of Al Jazeera - which should delay them for a while I guess. And if that’s not a case for the advancement of fuel cell technology, then I don’t know what is!

And it’s worth noting that the Keynote address on the iPhones site is currently unaccessible due to high demand. I’d be guessing here, but Apple’s streaming server setup would be pretty impressive, so the number of users clamoring all over this story must be equally as impressive.
